What to do with a clear (or dormant) Card??
Anyone who has some experience of switching credit card balances around will have a number of credit card accounts registered to them.
What should you do with these cards??
The answer is pretty simple really - get rid of them!! There are numerous reasons why this is the answer.
Firstly, most balance transfer deals are offered only to new customers. If you have a card already, your application will not be successful - even if you have a card that hasn't been used for years. Exacty when you would be considered a 'new customer' again will vary between card providers. Give yourself the best chance by officially closing unused cards and accounts.
An unused balance on a card is recorded on your credit file - it is credit that you have been granted and could use at any time. If you have an available credit limit of £5,000 then this has to be taken into account when offering a new card or new credit facilities.
Credit Card charges can sometimes be levied so if you're not closely monitoring your card (who really checks a card with a nil balance from 5 years ago??), you may end up with annual charges being added to your account. If you don't have a direct debit set up, this could lead to all sorts of problems.
Identity theft may become an issue, and though there is a slim chance of this leaving you out of pocket, it's just not worth the risk. Close the account down!
Now......there may be a time when it's a good idea to keep a dormant account. If you have no other form of credit, this may be the only thing that keeps you with a positive credit rating. We'd guess that if you have a clear card from a number of years ago, you are a pretty disciplined character. If this is the case, use that card. Just do your shopping on it once a month, and pay it off - in full - at the end of the month. It'll help you in the long run.
So remember, play your finances cleverly and do what's right for you. Always Stay Smart and Pay Less!!
